Joel Skotte (6-2 225, 4.6/40), a three star recruit according to Rivals.com has notified Coach Riley that he will don the orange and black in 2012. Skotte is the 11th member of the 2012 recruiting class and for many was a top target and a "must get" in-state kid at the linebacker position.

Skotte had offers from Air Force, Boise State, Idaho, San Diego State and Washington State along with interest from Arizona State, Oregon, UCLA and Washington among others.

Beavs add 6'7" Tight End

Recruiting continues to move at record speed for Oregon State and yesterday, Caleb Smith (6-7 240) out of Renton, WA gave Coach Riley his verbal commitment. Smith was OSU's main target at the tight end position and is rated a three star prospect by Rivals.com and is the 22nd overall TE prospect in the nation. Many feel could add another star with a big senior season for his Kentridge High squad.

Smith had visited Corvallis and liked what he saw and many thought he would verbal earlier than he did. As it stands, OSU beat out the likes of Colorado, Purdue, UCLA, UNLV, Washington and Washington State (among others) for the big man. ASU, Boise St., Nebraska and Oregon were also showing interest.

Smith is a big kid who will be a prime target in the passing game as well as a big body moving downhill in the run game. Another great pick up for OSU as their 2012 recruiting class continues to get better and better.

Hardin Out Indefinitely

Sobering news out of Beaver camp today as Coach Riley told local media that starting corner Brandon Hardin will be out indefinitely with a shoulder injury. As if there weren't enough injured Beavers roaming the sideline, Hardin is a key piece to the defensive puzzle for Coach Banker and entering his senior season was set to be an impact player at his right corner position.

Riley stated that Hardin will have a screw put in his shoulder, I would imagine putting the rest of his career in jeopardy. (Rumors have Hardin being back as early as week five when OSU travels to Arizona State) Hardin started 15 games for the Beavers and was a lethal gunner on special teams prior to becoming the starting corner.

The list of walking wounded seems to grow by the hour in Corvallis. If anything, young talents will be pushed into back up roles and hopefully gain valuable experience that will help in the years to come. Of course this being looked at in an extremely positive light.

Palos Verdes Tackle Goes Orange and Black

According to Beaverblitz.com, OSU has picked up their ninth verbal commitment of the 2012 class and it is another offensive lineman. Chase Eldredge, a 6-4 260 pound offensive tackle out of Palos Verdes, CA (Palos Verdes HS) is the third commitment for OSU this month and the fourth offensive lineman this cycle.

Eldredge projects as a guard at the collegiate level and is a tremendously athletic downhill blocker in the run game. Technique-wise, he looks fundamentally sound and will be a great addition to Coach Cav's crew.

While OSU was his only offer, Chase was getting interest from Arizona State, San Diego State, UCLA and Washington. Eldredge is not rated by Rivals.com, but I'd expect him to be a solid three star prospect.

Kevin Frahm, Josh LaGrone and Shaydon Akuna are the most recent additions to the walking wounded, but on the positive side Brian Watkins, Geoff Garner and Brandon Hardin were suited up and were full participants.

• Jordan Poyer vs. Markus Wheaton is turning into a headed match up. Much like James Dockery and James Rodgers was last year.

• After reports of Terron Ward lacking the blocking skills needed to be a starter for OSU, I saw good fundamental blocking vs. Shiloah Te’o multiple times in 1-on-1 blitz pick up drills.

• LaVonte Barnett is a big body at OLB and has the physicality to go with it. He will probably redshirt but look for an impact next year.

• Jordan Jenkins mixed in with the first team today, a sign that he’s getting closer to 100%.

• Obum Gwacham will play this year and I think be a red zone terror for corners. If anything he’ll require safety help and free up the tight ends.

• Michael Doctor is the fastest OSU linebacker since Derrek Doggett and anything to the flat he eats up in a hurry.

Another perfect day for Beaver football as the team took to the Reser turf for their Tuesday practice. The story of the day, unfortunately, was the list of players not participating. Cam Collins, Brian Watkins, Darrell Catchings, Blake Harrah, Brandon Hardin, Rashaad Reynolds, Sean Martin and Geoff Garner were all held out for what I could gather were bumps and bruises.

Tuesday's Notes:

• Tyler Trosin returned kicks with the scout team and has some serious jitter bug in him. Maybe not this year, but Trosin could be a great kick/punt returner down the road.

• Malcolm Marable did his best to chest up Rueben Robinson off the corner. A black blur and pancake later Marable would have watched a blind-sided QB Ryan Katz pick his mouth guard off the turf had the situation been live. Robinson looks great at OLB.

• Peter Ashton and Tyrequek Zimmerman both look the part at safety as I got to see them don black shirts for the first time.

• DJ Welch flies to the football and knocked down multiple passes in the flat. This kid will factor into the rotation somehow.

• Jordan Poyer had yet another interception, but Wheaton got the better of him a few times connecting with Katz regularly.

• Malcolm Agnew continues to show he’s worthy of the praise he received entering this season. His vision between the tackles and ability to find the hole are impressive.

• Castro Masaniai mixed it up pretty well and ran with the first team on goal line situations. He looks like he’s in “ok” condition with the reps he got today.

• Former Beavers Sam Polescu and Pernell Booth were on hand to watch practice.

Beaver Freshmen Get MIP/Suspension

With a day to rest up bruised bodies, OSU freshmen tight ends Connor Hamlett and Tyler Perry, freshman defensive tackle Joe Lopez and freshman safety Will Story were contacted by Corvallis Police late Sunday night in response to a loud party. After attempts to get the tenants to open the door, CPD left and returned with a search warrant and forced their way inside the apartment.
Hamlett, Perry, Lopez and Storey were all cited with Minor In Possession of Alcohol and will serve a one game suspension according to Coach Riley. Riley added that the games in questions will be determined at a later date, along with further disciplinary actions from the team.

Washington Guard Picks OSU

There were whispers of a potential commitment occurring in the next couple days throughout Beaver Nation and today the whispers became a collective "hip-hip horray!"

The Beavers are looking to take anywhere from five to eight offensive lineman this cycle and Josh Mitchell (6-3 265) out of Snoqualmie, WA (Mount Si H.S.) is the third already committed to OSU (Isaac Seumalo and Gavin Andrews are the others).

Not only does Mitchell excel on the football field, he was the 2011 Washington State 3A heavyweight wrestling champion.

The Washington big man was on hand to check out the first AM practice of the fall for the Beavers today and shortly after gave Coach Riley his verbal. Mitchell had offers from Washington State, Wyoming and Montana and interest from Alabama, Cal, Oregon, Utah and Washington among others.

Tyler Anderson hauled in a one handed catch which was pretty impressive. Great to have a fullback who can be an offensive threat.

Rudolf Fifita batted down his third ball in two days in team drills. He's very athletic and can really get up. Knocking a 6-4 Sean Mannion pass down is no easy task.

Lance Mitchell looks 100% and had an INT off Ryan Katz today.

Jordan Poyer has solidified himself as a shutdown corner, the kid has a half dozen break ups every day.

Not much time for Katz today in the pocket. Lots of coverage sacks and pressure from the outside rushers.

Brandin Cooks ran with the first team in red zone drills today.

Ryan Katz is really working on his touch passes and looks good dropping the ball nicely into his taller tight ends.

A day that began somewhat sluggish finished with a flurry for the Beavers. There wasn't a cloud in sight for the fourth practice of the fall season. NOTES:

Sean Mannion has seemed to settle in finally after being a little out of control last year (for lack of a better term). He found Connor Hamlett early and often throughout the day. A nice combo to look forward to.
Donell Welch will be hard to keep off the field and ran some with the first team today. He is a sideline to sideline OLB.
Rudolf Fifita is at d-end and mixed in a little with the first team today.
Richard Mullaney improves daily and made a great catch up high today over a defender.
Cody Vaz looks like a solid pick for back up duties at this point in camp.
The offensive line suffered through bear crawls mid-way through practice.
Receivers had another good day. As I would turn my attention from the d-line and across the practice field I'd see receivers pulling balls out of the air left and right.
Tyler Perry looks like more of a pass catching tight end than a blocking tight end.
Mishawn Cummings seems to be getting his feet under him. He was in the right spot often today and had a couple break ups.
Today the team did red-ball and red-zone drills, all with high intensity. Good pace to practice once it got going.

Wednesday Practice Notes

The backfield tandem of Ryan McCants and Clayton York look pretty intimidating in short yard situations.

Think I saw Cooks drop his first catchable ball this fall. Says a lot about the true freshman.

Heavy focus on the short passing game today and for the most part QB's and RB's seem to be on the same page. Lots of guys who can catch out of the backfield.

Michael Doctor had a good day again, and seeing him fly around the corner on a blitz untouched was what I've been waiting to see from the speedster.

Colin Kelly vs. Scott Crichton was a great 1-on-1 battle all day. Both are big guys and strong. Same with Kevin Frahm and Burke Ellis.

Surprisingly good blocking on blitzing linebackers from some of the runningbacks in their 1-on-1 time.

Safeties worked a lot on getting deep into their drops, staying over the top and going up high for the ball. If the linebackers can be counted on to do their job, the safeties can float and play the ball and not worry about the run as much.

Heavy emphasis on communication throughout the defense again today.

Practice Day 2 Notes

All RB's look good in the passing game. Soft hands and a quick turn up field.

Tight End will be a highly competitive position this year and down the road. A lot of talent at the position and all can catch well.

Coach Cav finally vocalized his frustration today. It isn't football without Cav's purposeful scolding.

This could be the most accurate group of quarterbacks I've seen this early in camp. Everyone looked great today, even when the defense was put in.

Terron Ward had a nice one handed catch over the middle on a ball thrown behind him.

Defensively there is a heavy emphasis on vocalizing assignments and the guys are doing well. Lots of chatter and general 'pep' for the blackshirts. Lead by Kevin Frahm.

Kevin Cummings continues to look like a valid receiving option. He runs great routes, isn't afraid to go over the middle, and has great hands. Think Darrell Catchings back when he was a freshman.

Reynolds and Keynan Parker were the #2 corners. Shiloah Te'o, Tony Wilson, and DJ Welch were the #2 backers. Starters on both sides of the ball were as expected.

Feti Unga slid for a nice interception of Ryan Katz, then a few plays later would have knocked a crossing receiver into next Saturday. Unga looks comfortable inside to me.

Brandon Hardin seems quicker and while he still may have the worst hands in the Beaver secondary, has developed good ball skills. Hardin had numerous pass break ups on the day and an INT…that he dropped.

Cody Vaz made the right read and delivered a strike to his wide out. That followed promptly by a loud "YES!" from Coach Langsdorf and a bear hug.

Finally saw the speed from Scott Crichton off the edge. He blew by Colin Kelly and would have recorded a sack. The kid is big and fast and destined for big things at OSU.

Good Pace for 1st Day

The sun finally decided to peek through what was a cloudy/overcast early afternoon at Prothro Field in Corvallis. A crowd of around 100 onlookers and multiple media outlets were on hand to check out the new look 2011 Beavers and I think liked what they saw on day 1.

It is becoming more and more evident with each passing recruiting cycle that OSU is attracting a higher level athelte. This year seems no different. Dylan Wynn, Desmond Collins, Brandon Bennett are big bodies who look physically ready for D1 football already. The skilled position that stood out most was receiver. Between Brandin Cooks, Tyler Trosin, Richard Mullaney, and Tyreke Zimmerman OSU is looking good down the road.

As expected the linebackers looked to be much faster in pursuit, something that both I and Beaverblitz.com will have a keen eye on as camp gets under way and the pads start poppin.

Oregon State Head Football Coach Mike Riley gears up for his 11th season at the helm of the Beavers when the team takes to the practice field Mon., Aug. 8 for the first official day of practice for the 2011 season. The team opens the year Sat., Sept. 3 against the Sacramento State Hornets in Corvallis.
The first five days of practice are an NCAA mandated "acclimation period." The acclimation period was put into effect by the NCAA in 2004 with the intent to lessen injuries and heat-related illnesses. The period is free of multi-practice days that were common in college football prior to the recent legislation. Student-athletes will practice without pads until days three and four, and will first be in full gear Fri., Aug. 12.
The first "two-a-day" is Sat., Aug. 13 beginning at 8:30 a.m. and then again at 6:30 p.m. Game officials are tentatively scheduled to be present Aug. 18 and Aug. 24. In addition, the team will participate in several popular "team building" activities, including rock/paper/scissors, sumo wrestling, bowling, pool and swimming competitions. Several guest speakers will also visit campus during the month.
Practices are open to the public and are generally held at the Tommy Prothro Football Complex between the Sports Performance Center and the Truax Indoor Center. The second practice of a two-a-day is located in Reser Stadium.

OSU Gets Another In-State Commitment

Espitia Jr. committed to OSU

OSU has bumped it's 2012 commit list to seven with the addition of South Salem H.S. stand-out Maximo Espitia Jr. Espitia Jr is listed as a receiver via Rivals.com however it is unsure yet what position he will play at OSU. I had a chance to see the kid last year at the NIKE Camp in Corvallis and he was lean, but very athletic.

I believe his future is at outside linebacker, but serious weight will need to be put on. At 6-2 205 pounds he will be a versitile body wherever he ends up. He potentially could play OLB, Safety, or Receiver. Maximo had written offers from California and Idaho and interest from the entire west coast.

Michael Bibbee, a 6-2 237 pound redshirt freshman from Eugene and Dax Dilbeck, 6-1 208 pound sophomore out of Oklahoma have left the program and will no longer be with the team. Reasons for their departure is unknown at this time. Both were expected to have an impact on the depth chart as early as this season. Certainly a tough blow for the future of OSU, but it opens a safety and linebacker spot for the 2012 recruiting class.

Aaron Nichols to be a Cardinal

Aaron Nichols is the newest former Oregon State Beaver to propel himself into the National Football League. The Honolulu native caught 42 balls for 512 yards and two scores in his time with the Beavers. Nichols reached an agreement with the Arizona Cardinals for the upcoming 2011 season.

After handing SMU the "death penalty" in 1987 for under the table payments to players, the NCAA took it's foot of the punishment accelerator and has seemingly coasted through the past two decades without issuing such strict penalties. Until now.

The improper benefits scandal involving Reggie Bush at USC, forced the NCAA to come down hard on the storied Trojan program. USC was banned from post season play for two years, was forced to vacate the 14 victories from 2004 - 2005 in which Bush played, and lost 30 scholarships over three seasons. Suffice it to say, the NCAA got the nation's attention.Or so they thought.

Now with scandal and controversy surrounding top flight programs, specifically Ohio State and Oregon, the NCAA has had enough. Just like a parent catching their child doing something wrong after being previously warned not to, the NCAA Enforcement Committee is embarrassed at the blatant lack of respect from said programs and outlined in the article below by Tony Barnhart of CBSSports.com lays out the specifics of the NCAA's plan of attack.

See your team in your mind's eye -- 24 starters, including specialists.

If you could put an absolute halo of safety -- perhaps a girdle of indestructibility? -- around just one, who would it be?

We're rating each team's most indispensable player. And when the choice is too obvious -- say, Stanford -- we'll try to offer a second choice.

WR Markus Wheaton

This one is a little different, because we're basing it on a potential worst-case scenario: What if receiver James Rodgers (knee) and H-back Joe Halahuni (shoulder) miss some, much or all of the season, or are not themselves when they see action? If Rodgers and Halahuni are back, then the Beavers have a strong crew of pass-catchers that will improve the quality of quarterback Ryan Katz's life. In that scenario, then Katz would become the Beavers' most indispensable player, even though the coaches feels good about sophomore backup Cody Vaz and the potential of redshirt freshman Sean Mannion, particularly after a strong spring from Vaz. Still, Wheaton will be a critical guy for the Beavers no matter what, with or without Rodgers and Halahuni. The junior is a playmaker, the Beavers' leading returning receiver with 55 receptions for 675 yards and four touchdowns. He also was the second-leading rusher in 2010 with 220 yards and two touchdowns, as he became the fly sweep guy when Rodgers was lost. Further, he can help in the return game -- punts and kicks. You get the idea that Oregon State coaches want the ball in Wheaton's hands. And if Rodgers and Halahuni aren't around or are limited, then who will the playmakers on offense be, other than Wheaton? Consider last year's stats. Junior Jordan Bishop has tantalizing skills but he only caught 22 passes last fall. Senior Darrell Catchings has struggled to stay healthy and to be consistent when healthy. Oregon State doesn't look like a team that will be able to line up and run right at you -- see the offensive line struggles of 2010 and the departure of multi-purpose back Jacquizz Rodgers to the NFL draft. It's going to have to throw the ball to win. Katz can do just that --- he has loads of talent and a year of experience under his belt. But he needs weapons. Wheaton, at this point, looks like the first choice in his arsenal. Perhaps even if Rodgers and Halahuni come back.

Linnenkohl Earns Pac-10 Honor

Oregon State football center Alex Linnenkohl and volleyball outside hitter Jill Sawatzky are the recipients of the 2010-11 Tom Hansen Conference Medal, awarded annually to each member institution’s outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership, announced Monday.

Linnenkohl was one of the best centers to ever play at Oregon State, starting 38 straight games and serving as a co-captain in his final season. As a senior, he was a candidate for the Rimington Trophy, which is given to the nation’s top center. He also earned All-Pac-10 Second Team accolades as a senior, named honorable mention as a junior.

He was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic Honorable Mention selection, earning Everyday Champion distinction during his senior season, and graduating with a degree in business.

Seumalo Video: The Opening

The Opening is serving as a spring board for some of the nation's top recruits to showcase their skills and garner attention from the nation's premier programs. Rivals.com recruiting analyst Adam Gorney had this to say about recent OSU commit Isaac Seumalo:

"Someone else who deserves special recognition is Oregon State commit Isaac Seumalo, who is technically sound, strong, immovable and fierce. Rated No. 20 at his position and No. 175 in the 2012 class, Seumalo has proven this spring he deserves to move significantly up the rankings."

Also in attendance are OSU commits CB Cleveland Wallace and WR Malik Gilmore, both who are reportedly very vocal about their commitment to Oregon State. Wallace even went as far as shaving "OS" in his hair. Hopes are with exposure and positive press from Wallace, Seumalo and Gilmore the Beavers may be able to snag a couple more top notch athletes to add to their already star studded 2012 class.

Season Tickets

2011 Pre-Season Preview by College Football Zealots

I was recently contacted by College Football Zealots (an up and coming website dedicated to all that is NCAA football) to team up and answer some questions regarding the 2011 OSU football season, hope you enjoy.

With the Rodgers brothers poised to lead an explosive Oregon State offense we had high expectations for the Beavers in 2010. Unfortunately, that never came to be as the Beavers dropped early games to TCU and Boise State and then lost James Rodgers in game five against Arizona when he went down with a season-ending injury. Oregon State started 4-3 overall and 3-1 in conference but then dropped games to UCLA and Washington State and dropped four of their final five games to finish with a losing record overall and in the conference.

While the Beavers did not live up to our expectations last year their first year QB Ryan Katz did gain some valuable experience and had his moments. WR James Rodgers has been granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA when they granted him a medical hardship for the 2010 season. It remains to be seen how quickly Rodgers comes back or how effective he will be but this sounds like very good news to me. One reason to be apprehensive about this years Beavers squad is their schedule. In addition to playing a nine game Pac-12 schedule, Oregon State picks up two very tough match-ups in Wisconsin and BYU

Jacquizz Rodgers racked up over 1,400 yards last year and scored 17 TDs? Who is going to replace him?

OSU returns senior running back Ryan McCants and junior Jordan Jenkins, the two most likely to earn the starting spot or at least share time until one emerges as the true starter. Jenkins suffered a torn labrum in his shoulder and should be ready by fall camp. Jenkins is the best all around back for the Beavers (improved his speed, good size at 6-1 207, and reliable hands in the passing game) and was expected to get the bulk of the carries until he went down with the injury in the early spring.

Sr. RB Ryan McCants

McCants is a big back (6-1 235) but the knock on him is he doesn't know how to run behind his pads and use his size effectively. He's not a juke-n-jiver like Jacquizz Rodgers was. People thought he would be the next Steven Jackson and the talent is there, it's whether or not he can put it together in his final season as a Beaver and run downhill with a purpose.

Jovan Stevenson is another guy to watch for. He played 2nd fiddle to Jacquizz in 2009 as a true freshman, then missed the entire 2010 season due to a shoulder injury. He's added 12 pounds of muscle since his freshman year and looks to be a legit factor in the running back battle. Stevenson is the quickest of the trio and can make people miss in space and separate with good top end speed.

James Rodgers has been granted another year of eligibility by the NCAA. What kind of impact do you think he will have this year?

It was great news and frankly, just sheer luck that allowed James to return for his fifth year. He played as a true freshman and never used up his redshirt year. Unfortunately for him and the team, he suffered a concussion in the Boise State game, then two weeks later blew up his knee in an upset against then #9 Arizona on the road. How it all worked out, he was one quarter shy of not receiving a medical hardship.

The road to recovery has been long and included two separate knee surgeries. James is one of the hardest workers on the team (Coach Riley has said as much) and if anyone can bounce back it's him. He's running on his leg now with no support and catching balls from QB Ryan Katz, but it remains to be seen how confident he will be come fall camp.

If he does return healthy, he is one of the most dynamic play-makers on offense and in the return game in the entire nation. I'd expect big things in 2010 from James, maybe not in the first couple weeks as he gets stronger and more confident, but mid-season look for him to be back to his old self. His leadership on offense is immeasurable and it will be a huge morale boost to see #1 (switched his number) in the huddle.

Who are some under-the-radar guys that you think will step up for Oregon State this year?

It's going to come down to whether or not OSU can stop the opposing offense in 2011. Speed at linebacker may be the most noticeable factor and the place where Beaver Nation sees the biggest improvement. Michael Doctor (5-11 223) out of Oklahoma has a season under his belt and is lightning quick at his OLB position. He and Cam Collins should both be upgrades to the two senior 'backers OSU lost to graduation.

Another unsung hero could be Grant Johnson. Johnson started as a guard the past two seasons, but now shifts over to fill the void left at center by the departed Alex Linnenkohl. Johnson is a smart player who will anchor the offensive line with fellow senior tackle Mike Remmers.

Oregon State loses a lot of talent on the defensive side of the football. Who will be the defensive leaders on this team?

Cameron Collins Sr. OLB

Cam Collins will need to take on a leadership role for the Beaver-D, along with senior safety Lance Mitchell. Collins transitioned from safety to OLB last season and came on strong at the end of the year. He's comfortable now that he's learned the position and at 6-2 240 and 4.5 speed, NFL scouts will love his game and hopes are he can seal the edge and not allow broken plays or QB scrambles that killed OSU last season.

Lance Mitchell is the leader of the secondary and has been a playmaker for two seasons now. His teammates respect him and I expect big things from Mitchell in 2011. Mitchell has five interceptions and may double that number this year.

Looking at the schedule, what are the most important games this year?
OSU @ Utah on October 29th looks to be a tough task, 2nd road game in as many weeks and it will be the 6th straight game for the Beavers. Rice-Eccles Stadium is a tough place to play (elevation) and Utah is riding high now that they're playing with the "Big Boys" of the Pac-12. Any win in year 1 will be a statement for Utah and they've beaten OSU in Salt Lake before.

What is your gut feeling on the final record for the 2011 season and what makes the season successful in your eyes?

To tell you the truth, my gut and brain are arguing about the Beavs' potential in 2011. There are pieces in place, and while they may be upgrades in speed and athleticism you can't argue with on field experience. Defensive tackle is a huge question mark, as is runningback. Both positions vital to OSU's success on each side of the ball.

I do think OSU makes it back to the post season due to the infusion of speed on defense and an offense that I think we see evolve under Ryan Katz, now in his 2nd year as the Beaver signal caller.

A successful season would be getting to the post season and winning a bowl game. Coach Riley has taken OSU to the post season six times since 2003 and won five bowl games. OSU has started off well regarding their 2012 recruiting class and a successful season, topped off with a bowl win will go a long way in ensuring that OSU remains a perennial threat in the Pac-12 North.

OSU is widely known as the most family friendly program in the nation and yet again, OSU has added another member of the Beaver Nation family.

Isaac Seumalo (6-3 280 Corvallis H.S.) has notified Coach Riley that he will play for the Beavers in 2012. Seumalo is regarded as one of the nation's most versitile big men taking MVP honors at various camps this summer at both offensive and defensive tackle.

Seumalo is the son of d-line coach Joe Seumalo and brother to current OSU senior d-lineman Andrew Seumalo. Isaac holds offers from Arizona State, Boise State, Montana, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and Washington.

Pac-12 Network - Google-Bound?

With the new Pac-12 TV deal bordering on an absolutely ridiculous $3 Billion, Commissioner Larry Scott is now shopping around for a home for the new Pac-12 Network. Common thought process would be to A) Buy and revamp an already existing channel and B) Create a new channel dedicated solely to Pac-12 Athletics.

But as John Wiltner of the San Jose Mercury News lays out in his most recent article, a TV network may not be the approach Mr. Scott takes:

Model 3: The non-subscription approach

This is the whopper: The conference would bypass the traditional, sub-based model and align with one of the tech giants.

Instead of teaming up with Time Warner or Comcast, the league would partner with Google or Apple.

Instead of turning on your TV to watch the Pac-12 Network, you’d turn on your computer (or tablet or mobile phone).

The drawback to this approach is that in the short term, the conference would give up the revenue that comes from subscription fees — it would rely on advertising alone for revenue. But because of the $250 million flowing in annually from the Fox/ESPN, the league has financial flexibility — it can select the network structure that best fits its philosophy and long-term needs, even if that’s not the most lucrative near-term option.

The Google/Apple TV model is clearly a play on the future — in three or five years, big screen televisions and laptop computers will be one in the same.

It also fits with the west coast’s spirit of innovation that Scott and the league presidents are so intent on embracing. (By the way: Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are Stanford grads, and Stanford president John Hennessy sits on the Google board.)

I’m not saying the league will absolutely adopt this structure for the Pac-12 Network — models 1 and 2 are also being examined closely. But conference officials have had discussions with representatives of the tech giants, and Scott is serious about partnering with Google or Apple. Very serious.

The Oregon State Department of Athletics announced Friday the launch of a new digital ticketing system that will provide fans greater convenience and security by scanning bar-coded tickets at most of its athletic events. The new system will make its debut at OSU’s season-opening football game against Sacramento State, Sept. 3.

Fans will benefit from heightened protection against counterfeit tickets and will be able to take advantage of new digital ticketing services, including Print-at-Home tickets.

“Like a majority of professional venues, Oregon State will now scan all tickets at the gates of Reser Stadium, Gill Coliseum and Goss Stadium using a bar code on the bottom of each ticket to verify admission,” Cecil Hairston, Assistant Athletic Director of Ticket Operations said. “The ability to scan helps indentify counterfeit and stolen tickets, providing Beaver fans with improved security and service.”

With the digital ticket system in place, the Oregon State Athletics officials encourage fans to arrive early to the gates for home games. Arriving early will ensure all fans gain quick access to their seats by avoiding the last minute rush to the gates.

Fans will be able to print single game tickets from their office or home computers using the new Print-at-Home feature. Print-at Home tickets should be printed on white paper using either black or color ink. Each ticket should be printed on 8.5x11-inch paper and treated like any other ticket. For fans’ security, Print-at-Home tickets are individually bar-coded. The bar-code allows one scan per entry so any attempts to duplicate, alter or sell any copies of the Print-at-Home ticket may result in admittance being refused to the event.

The 2011 season looms and with camps going on all throughout the nation teams are set on selling their program and proving that they are the best option for 2012 high school seniors. OSU has started off well with the five commitments from their 2012 class, but where do the Beavs stand recruiting-wise for the 2012 season in your eyes.

Verbals from: QB, OT, TE, CB, and WR
Star Ratings: 3.2 average in the first 5 commits

- Did OSU get some steals with some of these three star kids? Vanderveen/Wallace possibly inching towards 4* status with a big Sr. year?

- Has OSU already addressed positions of need well? What else (other than D-Tackle) needs to be heavily focused on?

- How do you grade the coaching staff's approach? Lots of offers, seemingly all over the nation to high quality guys. Do they really stand a chance with these 'big boys' or is it much of the same, just glad to be in the discussion?

- Who do you think is the next to verbal? Who do you WANT to be the next to verbal?

OSU Gets Commit From 2012 QB

The recruiting race is speeding up and OSU continues to hang in with another quality piece of the 2012 puzzle now in place. Coach Riley has molded young quarterbacks Derick Anderson, Matt Moore and Sean Canfield and made them into NFL caliber signal callers. With 2010 signee Sean Mannion already on the roster and expected to do big things, he may get a push from OSU's fifth verbal commit for the 2011-2012 season.

Arroyo Grande, CA quarterback Brent Vanderveen pulled the trigger and couldn't be happer with his decision when speaking to Beaverblitz.com:

"Oregon State was the best. When I was making my decision talking about all three schools distance wasn't a factor."

Vanderveen goes 6-5 205 and can scoot for a kid his size. Ranked a three star dual-threat quarterback (9th best QB prospect in the nation) by Rivals.com, he can make plays with his legs and clearly OSU looks to have added a tremendous threat for the future.

While Vanderveen is nimble and can tuck and run, his poise in the pocket and ability to keep his eyes down field and throw on the run, on target is what made Coach Riley extend an offer. Brent chose OSU over Arkansas, Arkansas State and Oklahoma State. Others showing interest of note were California, UCLA, USC, Utah, and Washington.

Recruiting an offensive tackle has been an emphasis by the Beavers' coaching staff in this cycle and last night they received their first commitment from the position and their fourth overall commit for 2012.

Gavin Andrews (6-5 280) Granite Bay, CA camped at OSU but wasn't able to participate at 100% after suffering a medial meniscus tear mid-way through his wrestling season. Andrews will be full-go in a few weeks and work hard to get back into playing shape.

Andrews had offers on the table from Arizona, Boise State, Colorado, Nevada, Utah and Washington State. While Arkansas, California, Nebraska, Oregon and UCLA were also in contact but had yet to offer.

Sacrifice for the Greater Good: Beavers Without Borders

In college athletics, a landscape which has slowly gone the way of corruption, big money, and scandal, few stories hold the power to span the globe and in effect touch the hearts and change the lives of so many. This is one of those stories.

Taylor Kavanaugh came to Oregon State University looking to make a difference on the football field and earn a degree in construction engineering management. What lie ahead for the once diminutive walk-on out of Portland not only exceeded his own personal expectations, it brought back meaning to the term “student-athlete” at Oregon State University and would jump start a program that those involved describe as “life changing.”

A tireless worker on the gridiron, Kavanaugh earned a spot on the ’05 Beaver football team and quickly became a fan favorite and a reliable set of hands for Coach Riley. Recipient of the Lunch Bucket Award three years in a row (awarded to the team’s hardest worker by the players) Kavanaugh finished his OSU career in 2009, capped by an onside kick recovery that sealed a 27-21 victory over the then-#1 ranked USC Trojans.

With degree in hand and a motivation to make a difference, the four-time Pac-10 All-Academic Team member looked forward to what the world had to offer and how he could leave his footprint for those to follow.

As a member of the OSU Athletics Student-Athlete Advisory Board, Taylor hopped on a plane and made his way across the South Pacific with his best friend. What the two learned on their adventure would be a precursor to what we now embrace as Beavers Without Borders.

For his efforts, Kavanaugh was honored as part of the prestigious 2009 Allstate Insurance Company and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) “Good Works Team.” The honor is given out to 22 student athletes annually, only 11 of which are from the NCAA 1-A Football Bowl Subdivision.

Fast forward to the spring of 2011, a group of 15 student athletes, led by Kavanaugh made their way to Guatemala to help build a house for a family in need. Home to nine, the once one bedroom, one bath structure was renovated with room enough for all. The project took on a life of its own and now serves as a beacon of hope for the small city of Alotenango and a means to a life changing experience for future OSU student athletes.

Kavanaugh’s passion on and off the field is one of complete selflessness and something that he most certainly doesn’t take for granted. Like so many before him, he feels his involvement with Oregon State Athletics has helped shaped the man he is today.

“I became involved with Beavers Without Borders because I have felt for some time now, that I owe much of my character and who I am as a person, to Oregon State Athletics. This became even more evident as I left OSU and entered into the corporate environment.”

After being a part of such an eye opening experience, Kavanaugh saw an opportunity to share what he had learned on his travels and didn’t hesitate to seize it.

“Coupled with my interest in travel & service, these two factors had me thinking about how Student Athletes could obtain the same opportunities I had to see the world and it's people.” He continued, “So essentially, I made an effort to pair my international connections, with the strong ties in OSU athletics. Beavers Without Borders is what came of it.”

A program that has captured the hearts of all Beaver Nation, Beavers Without Borders has sent 28 Oregon State student athletes from ten different sports around the world on missions of sacrifice:

Kavanaugh summed up his vision of the program well,

“Beavers Without Borders’ short term mission is to provide international service opportunities to OSU student athletes and inspire all of Beaver Nation to follow suit. The long term mission is to provide this opportunity to other schools as well as individuals outside of athletics.”

As the liaison between the OSU International Program, OSU/NCAA Compliance, OSU Risk Management, and the University’s main Non-Profit Organization (NGO), Marianne Vydra holds Beavers Without Borders close to her heart much like Kavanaugh.

After having the opportunity to accompany the student-athletes to Guatemala and serve as a mentor and teacher, Marianne believes that growth and maturity is what the kids get most out of Beavers Without Borders.

“The program is all about access for our student-athletes to participate in an international service project which will allow the students an accelerated maturation process. Developmentally, they are changed after experiences like these. “

Far too often collegiate athletes are seen as ‘larger than life’ and can lose sense of who they are and the very real world that they live in and will be thrust into once their playing days are over. Beavers Without Borders, according to Marianne, bridges that gap between self imposed idolism and pragmatism.

“They (student athletes) are able to allow themselves to be vulnerable around their peers in an altruistic manner – and they get to know each other as people. Their identities are so wrapped up in their sports that this intense experience allows them to shed all of that for a short time together and then come back changed people. This opportunity gives us another option to grow world-aware leaders. “

For some, it may be a harsh lesson learned, but there’s no doubt that the experience molds the student athletes into much more mature adults and opens their eyes to something that is bigger than themselves.

While the communities that they visit are impacted and forever changed, Kavanaugh feels OSU student athletes gain so much more from the Beavers Without Borders experience.

“The impacts are immeasurable.” Kavanaugh said, “I'm not sure if you can really quantify things like this. For the families we are working for, we are literally providing them a new opportunity at life. Giving somebody a home, security, a new future for their children, is a very powerful thing. Especially when you can really see the despair and the resulting appreciation.”

He went on to say,

“But given all this, I think the impact on the student athletes is even greater. You will hear any of them admit that they probably got more out of the experience than the family did. This is an opportunity for these athletes to change the way they view school, sport and life in general.”

For Marianne the sentiments are the same.

“It affords our graduates a very unique mentoring opportunity I didn’t think about when we were putting all of the pieces into place. It even affords our older, current student-athletes that same opportunity as the younger student-athletes look to them for guidance at times.”

While the main goal of the missions are to work hard and build a house, there’s also fun to be had. The YouTube video from the Guatemala trip shows plenty of laughter and clips of the community and athletes playing soccer. Kavanaugh recalls a funny moment from the trip involving punter Johnny Hekker.

“Funny story, Johnny Hekker eats the street food in Guatemala and gets sick on the 2nd day. While attending salsa lessons, we hear him yell "This chip is dipped!" and throw up all over the place. He was out of commission for a day and half.”

His message to those planning on traveling to Guatemala;

“Don't mess with food in Guatemala.”

As far as the impact on the football program itself, Kavanaugh is living proof,

“Mike Riley says that the football players that went to Guatemala are visibly different. Better leaders, tougher, and have more of that "x-factor". I believe him.”

In a society that focuses on the negative and far too often misses the encouraging stories that occur daily, Taylor Kavanaugh is doing his part to make a change world-wide and as Marianne puts it, he is the just the type of man who can.

“Taylor Kavanaugh is a one-of-a-kind young man. OSU is blessed to have him as an alumni. He is the most unselfish, giving person I have seen come through our doors in the 20 years I have been here – and I mean this about everything he does.” She finished by saying, “He is going to something big for this world and I feel lucky that I get to watch it unfold right in front of all of us.”

I'd an effort to make my blog more interactive for both me and my readers, if people have questions or comments I'd be more than willing to answer/discuss all inquiries relating to Oregon State football (including recruiting) or the Pac-12. I'm thinking this will be similar to Ted Miller's "Mail Bag" feature on his Pac-12 blog. Questions pertaining to national news stories not in relation to OSU or the Pac-12 (i.e. Ohio State's troubles or the Bill Stewart fiasco) are welcome and I will do my best to answer them.

Beaver Coaches Impressive on Recruiting Trail

After staying home over the holidays and posting their worst season since 2005, it feels as if Oregon State has created some momentum heading forward in the recruiting battle. A newly organized way of doing things, headed by former OSU quarterback Ryan Gunderson seems to be paying huge dividends for the program. Match that with a renewed sense of motivation and an injection of youth from Coach Brennan and OSU has come out of the blocks strong.

Looking at what OSU has done thus far with commitments for 2012 and a couple for 2011 is pretty impressive:

Mishawn Cummings (6-0 190 / 4.4) CB 2011 Class - Not a highly sought after prospect, but an athlete with size, speed, and collegiate experience and a 3x3. Love the pick up and hopes are OSU can get some mileage out of him in 2012. None the less, it's another body in a position of need.

Naji Patrick (5-9 183 10.94 100m) RB 2011 Class - This kid is a spitting image of Yvenson Bernard in my eyes. Balance, tough between the tackles, smart runner. However, he possesses the speed Yve did not. Will be a preferred walk on and doubt we'll see much from him in 2011, but I like the move by Riley here and see potential. Before an ankle injury that slowed him a bit the kid had 573 yards and 11 TD's in three weeks. Riley says the best indication of future production is past production (or something like that) and this kid had 1,264 yards and 20 scores on a bum ankle.

Cleveland Wallace (6-1 190 4.6) CB 2012 Class - Wallace continues to earn MVP honors at NIKE camps and is going to see his stock soar here in the next couple months. The early OSU commit will keep bigger schools off of him but Kansas St, Oregon, UCLA, Wash are already all showing interest. Another corner with great size and I think can be a starter in two years.

Dustin Stanton (6-6 210) TE 2012 Class - Stanton has been compared to a young Kyle Rudolph, which is a huge statement since Rudolph was the 1st TE taken in this year's draft (43rd overall). Big body, athletic, will grow and put on good weight and be a great H-back for OSU. I say he plays at 6-6 245 and is a force by the time he's done. Loved his film.

Malik Gilmore (6-3 195) WR 2012 Class - Cornerstone guy to be certain. Looks matured beyond his years in terms of fundamentals (routes, catching w/hands, body control). Just as an eye test he passes w/flying colors and already has the size to be a legit Pac-12 reciever, just imagine what training tables and full year with strength and conditioning coach Brian Miller will do. The early commit worries some, but hopefully OSU can get a couple other big name guys to commit and it reaffirms his pledge to OSU.

As a Beaver fan you couldn't be much happier at this point in the recruiting season with the direction this class is headed. After a 5-7 season it seems as if OSU has momentum on the recruiting trail which is a HUGE accomplishment based on years past. Can't wait to see this whole thing come together and what the final numbers are come February.

4-Star Receiver Verbals

It had been a while since OSU football had heard good news, and what just came across the wire should have all of Beaver Nation smiling.

Four star receiver Malik Gilmore (6-3 195) out of Lakewood California is the third verbal of the 2012 class for the Beavers. Somewhat out of the blue, Gilmore had been in touch with Coach Brennan and spoken with Coach Riley, but what made the commitment strange was that Gilmore has yet to step foot on campus in Corvallis.

His relationship with Coach Brennan from his time at San Jose St. is what may have sealed the deal even with sight unseen. Malik was offered by Brennan while he was still at SJSU and the offer moved north to Oregon State. Gilmore told Angie Machado of Beaverblitz.com:

"He offered me when he was at San Jose State and then he offered me when he moved to Oregon State," he said. "He is just a cool dude and I love the way he coaches. He told me about the family atmosphere at Oregon State and I like the coaches and the academics."

Gilmore is still planning on taking his remaining recruiting trips but is a solid verbal at this point in time and believes OSU is the place for him. Gilmore has offers from Arizona State, Colorado, Michigan, Notre Dame, Utah, Washington and others.

Summer Injury Updates

Kerry Eggers of the Portland Tribune sat down with Coach Riley to pick his brain about the up coming season and some of OSU's key contributers on their road to recovery. (Click here for full article)

On WR James Rodgers:

“James is on a treadmill, jogging, walking without a limp. He can jog out on the field. I’m encouraged, although conservatively. I don’t want to put any unreasonable or unknowledgeable expectations. The doctor thinks he’ll be ready to play football this season. He thought James might be a little late getting into camp, but he didn’t put any more restrictions on it than that.”

On QB Ryan Katz:

“He is still not totally cleared. He is not taking direct snaps, and he can’t do all the lifts. But he’s able to do a lot of the stuff that’s important, like throwing the ball and running.”

On WR Jordan Bishop:

“He’s running on the treadmill in water. The prognosis is he will be running in July. For him to have a good year, he’s going to have to be running and catching balls all through July to catch up on what he missed.”

On TE Joe Halahuni:

“The doctor said he will be ready to go by the first of September. To me, that means it’s probably another month before he’s playing in a game.” (Halahuni told Eggers that he anticipates a return "sometime in August.")

On RB Jordan Jenkins:

“He’s out of the sling and doing well in rehab. He should be at full speed by the start of camp.”

It is crucial for OSU's success to get the vast majority of those listed above back on the field at or near 100% for fall camp. There are plenty questions to be answered, and without the walking wounded most Beaver fans know the answer to those questions.

Hopes are with newly hired head football trainer Ariko Iso that the nagging injuries will be handled better and OSU can be at full strength heading into week one versus visiting Sacremento State.

Eggers also asked Coach Riley about defensive tackle Castro Masaniai and his status after a run in with law enforcement last month:

"Riley and OSU administrators haven’t yet determined a punishment for defensive tackle Castro Masaniai, charged in May with second-degree kidnapping, coercion, disorderly conduct, harassment and criminal mischief in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend. The charges are expected to be downgraded, however, and Masaniai might be able to avoid being suspended for a game or games by meeting community service and counseling demands."

Recruiting Numbers: Update

OSU still has just two commitments for the 2012 class with the most recent pledging orange and black on May 5th, but the offer list continues to grow as we move into the summer months.

With a heavy emphasis on receiver (13 offers) and offensive tackle (17 offers) OSU has tied up 30 of their total 82 offers at said positions. Injuries to James Rodgers and Jordan Bishop and six Beaver receivers in their junior or senior season has OSU is looking to re-load with top flight talents on the edges. if any prospect looks at OSU's track record at the receiver position over the past decade they'd be hard pressed to not be impressed.

At the offensive tackle position, Michael Philipp may be destined for a move inside and a redshirt year if OSU can land a high-caliber name at the position who can come in and play right away. The offensive tackle position looks to be pretty well stockpiled at the high school level and OSU hopes to reap the rewards of diligent recruiting.

With every position on the field covered on the offer list (yes even kicker) the Beavers want to wash the bad taste of a bowl-less 2010 out of their mouths and move forward into 2011-2012 with a quality class of dedicated student athletes. Here are the Offers as they stand now:

June is a quiet period by NCAA rules, meaning coaches are allowed to have 1-on-1 meetings with athletes only on their own campus. Season tickets for the 2011 Oregon State football season are now being sold with seat locations at the time of purchase.

Fans are encouraged to make their season ticket purchases while prime locations remain available.

You can be a part of history as the 2011 college football season marks the inaugural year of Pac-12 Conference play. Season tickets remain available for a schedule that includes home contests against BYU, UCLA, Washington, Arizona, Stanford and Sacramento State. BYU’s visit to Reser Stadium is the first for the Cougars in nearly 35 years.

Prices for season tickets start at $149 for the popular Valley View seats (sold out last season), located in sections 211-214 and 224-227 (Rows 8-higher). Season tickets in other areas (generally sidelines) are priced at $254, less than last year, with most requiring a per seat donation to the Beaver Athletic Student Fund.

In addition, the Family Plan ticket package remains available and is priced at $126 for adults and $110 for child tickets. The Family Plan tickets require that a minimum of one adult and one child ticket be purchased. Orders cannot exceed two adult tickets and four child tickets.

Tickets may be purchased in person at the Gill Coliseum ticket office or via 1-800-GO-BEAVS between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.

ESPN to air Beaver vs. Wisconsin Game

The Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday that the Sept. 10, 2011 football game between Oregon State and Wisconsin in Madison will be televised live by ESPN or ESPN2 beginning at 9 a.m. PDT (11 a.m. CDT).
The game will mark the second time Oregon State has traveled to Madison; the Beavers lost a 23-20 decision to the Badgers Oct. 14, 1961 in the only other matchup between the two programs. Wisconsin is scheduled to conclude the two-game series by traveling to Reser Stadium Sept. 8, 2012.
The Badgers’ coaching staff includes a pair of assistant coaches who held similar positions under OSU head coach Mike Riley in Corvallis. UW assistant coach/offensive coordinator Paul Chryst and wide receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander wore Beaver gear for the 2003 and ’04 seasons.
The Beavers officially begin practice Aug. 8 for the 2011 season and open the campaign Sept. 3 against Sacramento State in Corvallis.

Pac-12 Hires New Officiating Coordinator

It's been long known that the Pac-10 had some of the most inconsistent officiating (to put it nicely) in the country. With the influx of new blood brought forth by Commissioner Larry Scott, the Pac-12 will be moving forward with a new Officiating Coordinator.

The Pac-12 has named Tony Corrente, an NFL official since 1995, the conference's new coordinator of football officiating.

"Tony Corrente has extensive experience in both college football and the NFL and has earned the reputation as one of the most respected leaders in officiating," commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement. "With numerous NFL postseason assignments in his background, including the Super Bowl, Tony has worked at the very highest levels in the sport. We are very fortunate to have him leading our new football officiating program."

Mike Pereira, who served in the role as coordinator of football officiating on an interim basis since February, will remain as a consultant through the 2011-12 season as he continues to implement changes in the officiating program, the news release said.

Pereira initially brought on Corrente as a referee supervisor to review and evaluate officials working that position on the field. Corrente will be responsible for game assignments, best practices and training methods, as well as continuing to evaluate the officials through innovative technology.

“This is a welcomed challenge and I really look forward to working in the new structure of the Pac-12 Conference, and with the quality of officials we have on our staff,” Corrente said in the news release. “I credit Mike Pereira for laying the groundwork in restructuring the program, and know our officials will be prepared in positioning the Pac-12 officiating program as a role model program.”

Corrente will continue to work as an on-field official. As an NFL Referee, he has worked Super Bowl XLI and as an alternate in Super Bowl XL, as well as numerous AFC and NFC championship and playoff games. In addition, he was a history and sociology instructor, as well as a successful baseball coach at La Mirada High School, La Mirada, Calif., from 1983-2011.

Key stretch: Will the Beavers be fast finishers as they've typically been under coach Mike Riley, excluding the 2010 season? They will need to be if the goal is competing at the top of the North Division. It certainly should be a November to remember. Four of five divisional games are scheduled for November, so the Beavers should have a big say in how things play out at the end of the season -- for themselves and the other five teams.

Trap game: It's not really a trap: Odds are the Beavers will take a Nov. 12 visit to California seriously. And the Beavers typically do well in Berkeley, where they've won six in a row (and 10 of 12 from the Bears overall). But this is a road game sandwiched between home games with Stanford and Washington. Will the Beavers be at their best?

Sure thing: The opener against Sacramento State should give the Beavers a nice preseason game versus an FCS foe to work the kinks out before heading to Wisconsin.

Analysis: Another tough schedule for Oregon State, with nonconference games against Wisconsin and BYU. It's also a strange schedule. The early-season bye -- Sept. 17 -- means the Beavers will play 10 consecutive weeks. Further, they will have played two conference games by Oct. 1, but only one divisional game by Nov. 1. Interesting timing: The Beavers get Stanford at home the week before the Cardinal plays host to Oregon, which is expected to be the conference game of the year between two top-10 teams. Can you guess which game will be tapped as Stanford's "trap" game? Missing USC would normally seem like a good thing for most teams, but the Beavers probably wouldn't mind another visit from the Trojans. Wonder if the stakes again will be big in the Civil War?

Fox Adds Seven Pac-12 Broadcasts

If people were wondering just what effect a 5-7 season would have moving forward, the national TV networks are making it crystal clear: Oregon State, who?

After having 42 of their last 43 games broadcast on national or regional television, OSU has yet to hit ESPN/ABC or FOX's radar for the 2011 season. Earlier last month, the world-wide leader in sports released it's plan to televise 20 Pac-12 games, none of which featured the Beavers. Five games are still listed as "to be determined," the earliest being on October, 15th so hope remains that the Beavs will win early and be showcased nation-wide come mid-season.

After ESPN/ABC hand picked their programming, FOX jumped in to clean up the scraps left by big brother. Today it was announced that FOX had filled seven of their allotted 24 broadcast slots, and again OSU was left off the list:

Beavs Hire Head Football Trainer

After the dust settled from "Trainergate" and the demotion of former OSU head football trainer Barney Graff became public knowledge, OSU was able to move forward and this time the job search ended with a former alumnus. Read about her below in OSU's press-release.

Ariko (uh-Ree-ko) Iso (eye-so) has been appointed head football athletic trainer at Oregon State University, Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis announced Wednesday. The employment is contingent on Oregon State University's Administration and Human Resources' approval.

Iso arrives on the OSU campus after working as an assistant athletic trainer for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League since July of 2002. Iso was the only female athletic trainer in the NFL and worked in three Super Bowls for the team.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity that lies ahead at my alma mater,” Iso said. “Oregon State is where I started my athletic training education and I’m looking forward to returning to the beautiful campus after being away for 15 years. I have many fond memories of Corvallis as a student and I’m ready to make more.”

Prior to accepting the position with the Steelers, Iso spent five years as the associate athletic trainer for Portland State University, where she served as the head football trainer. Her collegiate career also includes serving as the assistant athletic trainer at Foothill College in California for nearly three years.

“I have been blessed throughout my life with my career path working with so many great mentors,” Iso said. “The past nine years I have had the opportunity to work for a great organization with the Steelers, and I want to thank the Rooney family for all they have done for me both professionally and personally. I have had so many great people I have worked with in Pittsburgh, including head athletic trainer John Norwig and assistant athletic trainer Ryan Grove. I leave a lot of great friendships behind, but I’m anxious for the new path that lies ahead and to make an impact by being a part of the progress of Oregon State’s student-athletes.”

In addition to her collegiate experience, Iso has served as the head trainer at the 2006 World 21 and Under Track Championships, the 2001 World Cross Country Championships, the 1998 Yokohama International Ekiden and the 1996 East-West Shrine Football Game. She has also worked at the Nike World Master Games, U.S. Mobil Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and at the 1994 World Cup Soccer tournament.

“I have been around only a few folks that have the same work ethic as Ariko, but what sets her apart is that her efforts are always made with a positive attitude,” Norwig said. “Ariko has always been the consummate professional. She loves her job.”

Iso graduated from Oregon State with a bachelor’s of science degree in health and human performance in 1993 and earned a master’s of art in physical education from San Jose State University in 1995. She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society. The Tokyo native is certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association.

“Without a doubt Ariko will be a great asset to Oregon State,” former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher said. “She has a great personality, and is very professional and knowledgeable. I have tremendous respect for her.”

James Rodgers: Rivals' 86th Best Player in 2011

After sustaining a season ending knee injury in week six in OSU's upset of then #9 Arizona on the road, James Rodgers is on the quickly shortening road to recovery and considered the 86th best player in the nation according to Rivals.com. Amid rumors that he will not be able to return full speed (if at all) in 2011, Rodgers has worked hard to rehab a knee that required two separate surgeries, nearly four months apart.

There's no doubting his work ethic, and Coach Riley has said as much in the media regarding his Texas Twosome (both he and his brother Jacquizz, recently drafted by the Atlanta Falcons). James' impact on the field was felt in the second half of the season, most notably by first year quarterback Ryan Katz.

With Rogers in the line up, OSU averaged 28.3 points per game and a respectable 353.3 yards per game. (This not including his punt return or stats vs. Boise State where he sufferered a concussion in the first quarter) Even in Tuscon in a quarter and a half, Rodgers caught a touchdown pass and was well on his way to a career day with 102 yards on seven catches.

After Rodgers went down for the season, Katz's numbers were less than impressive and at times flat out ugly. The redshirt sophomore averaged just 184 yards per game in his final seven contests w/o the elder Rogers brother and threw nine touchdown passes while logging 10 interceptions.

It is unknown just how effective the knee will be, but if there is anyone capable of recovering from such a devastating injury it's Rivals' 86th best player in 2011, James Rodgers.

Mike Riley: Committed to Oregon State

The first time that Mike Riley coached at Oregon State, in 1997-98, he used it at a stepping stone and left to coach the San Diego Chargers.

The second time that Riley coached at Oregon State, from 2003 to the present, he has used it as a stepping stone … to retirement. Riley has a contract to coach the Beavers until 2019.

“I feel very fortunate, first of all, to be back here, because not too many people would hire me back,” Riley said. That’s not true, not when Riley has turned down overtures from USC, UCLA and Alabama, his alma mater. But Riley will coach hockey before he will toot his own horn.

“I have a niche here,” he said. “I know this place and I love it and I can recruit to it with a passion. And I really understand what Oregon State’s about. I know who we are. I love it. I didn’t even know how much I loved it when I was younger. So now I’m grateful that I have that opportunity

The first time that Mike Riley coached at Oregon State, in 1997-98, he used it at a stepping stone and left to coach the San Diego Chargers.
. People ask me about other opportunities I’ve had, and why I didn’t go, and I said, ‘I’ve got a great place for young people to grow. I don’t want to start this over. I like this here and I hope it’s my last job.’”

He is coaching in the town in which he was raised. His son Matthew graduated from Oregon State and is working in the athletic department as a video specialist. His daughter Kate graduates from Oregon State in a couple of weeks.

Building a program with the values he cherishes, Riley said, “takes time. Four or five years is a minimum of getting a program established. That’s why, for me, I keep fighting for the [length] of my contract, because I know what time means. And I know that’s no guarantee but it helps. I have a contract right now through 2019.”

He laughed, almost embarrassedly so.

“My wife [Dee] said, ‘That’s enough!’” Riley said. “…I’ll be 58 this summer. In eight years, that’s the 65, 66 range. I guess that’s why my wife said that will be enough. The thing is, too, I get a year [added] every time we go to a bowl game. I thought of that!”

Did he tell Dee?

“Yeah, she knows,” Riley said. “You never know. There are no guarantees. You have to win in our business. But what it means to me is I understand the importance of time. I really appreciate that for what we do in our profession [and] what that means for our family, our coaches’ families, all that stuff. In our world, you know it better than anybody, that’s pretty hard to find.”

Every team has hope heading into the offseason. And every team has concerns.

Ergo, we're going to run through the conference and look at the chief matters -- on the up and downside -- for each Pac-12 team.

Next up:

Oregon State

Biggest reason for hope: If everybody shows up, the Beavers will be OK.

If Oregon State heads to Wisconsin on Sept. 10 with QB Ryan Katz, WR James Rodgers, WR Jordan Bishop, TE Joe Halahuni and RB Jordan Jenkins at 100 percent, it has a chance to win. And to keep winning and to become a factor in the North Division. Rodgers, Bishop and Halahuni would combine with WR Markus Wheaton to give Katz an outstanding array of options in the passing game -- one of the strongest in the conference, in fact. When healthy, Rodgers is one of the nation's best receivers and return men. That's a huge thing for the Beavers. Not to mention Rodgers' return would be uplifting emotionally for the team and in terms of leadership. Assuming that the line improves -- four starters are back from last year's underwhelming crew -- then the offense could thrive with the big-armed Katz taking the lead.

Biggest reason for concern: If everybody doesn't, the Beavers won't be OK. Especially with this defensive line.

All hands on-deck is not very likely, though. While Katz and Jenkins are expected back before fall camp, things have been murky for a while with Rodgers' knee issues. Bishop's ankle injury also shouldn't cause him to miss a game, but Halahuni's shoulder problem may keep him out until mid-September. Losing one guy for a few games is a hit but not an in surmountable obstacle. Losing more than one for a lot of games is a problem for a team that isn't terribly loaded with offensive playmakers. And the Beavers are going to have to score with what might be the Pac-12's most questionable defensive line, one that lost two NFL draft picks -- tackle Stephen Paea and end Gabe Miller -- and yet didn't do very well in 2010.

Beavs Working Hard in the Classroom

Oregon State's football program has had its ups and downs on the field. In the classroom, however, the Beavers have made steady and significant gains.

Football had the top Academic Progress Rate of OSU's men's teams, in data released today by the NCAA. That distinction is uncommon in Division I sports, where football and men's basketball teams typically lag others.

The football team's score of 959 is a jump from its 910 of six years ago, and ranks second in the Pacific-10 Conference behind Stanford's 977. The APR, which measures athlete eligibility and retention, has a possible score of 1,000. Each annual score is based on a four-year running average, and teams under a 925 can face penalties such as a loss of scholarships or suspension from postseason play.

Installation of a summer academic enrichment program for incoming freshmen and coaches learning how the APR works helped contribute to the improvement, OSU athletic director Bob De Carolis said.

"At the end of the day, though, it comes down to the kids," he said.

OSU punter Johnny Hekker, a pre-pharmacy major, said the Beavers' coaches also played a role in the team's improved marks.

"They foster the attitude that if it's urgent and we really need to be there, we can take care of the academic priorities before athletic priorities," he said.

Oregon State also earned the best department-wide APR in the six-year history of the measure, 968, and each team's most recent one-year scores were well above the cutoff for penalties.

Oregon State's football improvement is a turnaround from the early to mid-2000s, when grade-point averages for football players of color in particular were declining and two seniors including a co-captain flunked out. At the time, an internal review criticized OSU's academic support unit for athletes, concluding it had ineffective programs for at-risk students and failed to test athletes for treatable learning disabilities.

In the wake of the lower marks, officials hired Kate Halischak, who spent 12 years running academic services for athletes at Notre Dame, to do the same job at Oregon State. OSU also added more support staff and launched the Bridge Program to help freshmen earn credits and adjust to the rigors of college.

De Carolis cautioned people not to get too excited about OSU's scores; especially on smaller-roster teams, they can fluctuate greatly from year to year. But he said that the APR, a cornerstone of the NCAA's academic reform package, has motivated coaches and players to improve.

"I would say that part is working," he said.

Beavs Looking for New Head Football Trainer

After news blew up over social media sites regarding the mistreatment of athletes by head football trainer Barney Graff and the subsequent demotion, OSU is on a mission to find a head football trainer and rumor has it a very well qualified candidate may be at the top of the list.

Keep in mind, nothing is set in stone and a hire HAS NOT been made at this point. Here is the Bio of former OSU graduate Ariko Iso provided by Wikipedia.com:

Ariko Iso - (born December 7, 1970 in Tokyo, Japan) is an athletic trainer for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League. In 2002 Iso became the first full-time female athletic trainer in the NFL.

Iso became interested in athletic training after tearing her ACL while playing basketball and after hearing Oregon State University exercise physiologist Chris Zauner while in high school in Tokyo. Iso then attended Oregon State, earning her bachelor's degree in 1993. She then attended San Jose State University and earned hermaster's degree in 1995. She began athletic training while at San Jose State and worked at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. She was hired by Portland State Universityin 1996. At Portland State she worked with women's basketball, wrestling, and track and field before becoming the head football athletic trainer.

In 2000 and 2001 she worked as an intern at the Steelers' training camp. She was hired by the Steelers in 2002 to fill an open position, becoming the NFL's first full-time female athletic trainer. When hired, Iso became just the third female in male professional sports, with two in the NBA. She worked at the 2005 Pro Bowl with Steelers coach Bill Cowher in Honolulu, Hawaii. As an assistant athletic trainer, Iso is responsible for reviewing applications for the team's summer program that she previously participated in. Of all the applications, Iso said she receives 100–200 from women.

As the 2012 recruiting season kicks into full gear, you'd think OSU was set on their final 2011 numbers. Not so fast my friend. OSU received a signed letter of intent from St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School runningback Naji Patrick.

Patrick (5-9 183), while nursing a sore ankle in his senior season, managed a beefy 1,264 yards and 20 touchdowns. Of note, through three weeks of the conference slate when he was fully healthy, he had 573 yards and 11 scores.

Patrick's game is similar to former Beaver stand out tailback Yvenson Bernard. He has good vision and the ability to work through traffic. What Yvenson didn't possess was Patrick's 10.94 100 meeter speed.

Patrick will enter fall camp as a preferred walk on and hopes to bolster a deep but relatively inexperienced tailback position.

Trouble in the Training Room

With the recent rumblings on social media outlets such as Twitter concerning the quality of care for Oregon State athletes, the athletic department has stepped in and made a change. 14 year OSU head football trainer Barney Graff has been demoted.

A recent rash of injuries and long history of mis-diagnosed injuries has led to the dismissal of Graff. Graff will have the option of being reassigned elsewhere in the university athletic department, but will no longer be working with the football team.

A joke which sprouted legs and ran wild through Twitter and Facebook was "You should ice that." This in reference to an apparent lack of attention to what later turn out to be serious injuries, many times requiring surgery and found months after the injury occurred.

It seems as if Oregon State has been hit with an unusually large number of football injuries, whether it was former OSU fullback Andy Darkins’ biceps, former quarterback Sean Canfield’s torn labrum, former quarterback Lyle Moevao’s rotator cuff, Jacquizz Rodgers’ shoulder, or James Rodgers’ shattered knee.

But it's not only football players who are voicing their displeasure with the treatment they receive, or lack thereof. Members of the OSU volleyball and gymnastics team have come out and questioned the dedication and professionalism of Graff and the training staff.

While it's a tough lesson to be learned, one can only hope that heading forward the student athletes that give so much to the university will now get the treatment and 1-on-1 attention that they overwhelmingly deserve.
